52M-017: Damp Squib

Don't know what it's been like where you are but we've had some proper harsh weather here this week, so here's a mix of rainy day music I put together this morning while the heavens opened outside.

It's mostly loungey downtempo stuff, with nods to hip-hop, jazz, disco and soul along the way.

I suspect it *might* work equally well on a sunny afternoon. I'll let you know about that when summer decides to arrive...

52M-015: Bare Grillz

Summer and long balmy sunny days approach us (optimistic as ever) so I thought i'd jump the gun and knock out a BBQ mixtape. I'll probably do a few of these as the warmer weather gets more consistent, and this one's quite a relaxed mix to get us started. A "soaking the firelighters and prepping the Pimms" or "welcoming guests to the lawn" selection, if you will.

Make sure your guests/kids don't mind bad language cos there's a bit of it on the hip-hop tracks. Thing is if you're doing it right the guests will be swearing over how fucking good your grilled meats are, so no worries in the long run.

Enjoy! and always ensure your poultry is thoroughly cooked through...

52M-013: TuneStep Vol.3

More glorious Tunestep for you this week - and now i'm up to three mixes of the stuff I think I can definitely afford to start calling it "a series".

I am totally blown away by the opener on this one - Disclosure has nailed it with this remix and I reckon it could easily hold out to be one of the tunes of 2012. Amazing stuff. I'm also pleased I managed to wedge the VIP take of Monky's "Drunkerdz" into a mix too - he's a top producer and criminally overlooked at present. You can grab the original cut of Drunkerdz off the Brownswood Electric 2 compilation.

Heads down, skank on...

Jessie Ware - Running (Disclosure Remix)

It's another delve into the electronica crates this week with a selection that starts off all moody dubby halftimey bassy, and eventually shifts up a gear to encompass a bit of a future funk, big beat and shouty set of finishers. Definitely a few nappy-fillers here, so make sure you're wearing sturdy strides.

52M-010: Live @ De Cuba 10/03/12

This is what I tend to get up to on a Saturday night...

An hour or so of sunshine party music taken from my 5-hour set last night at Cardiff's Vodka Revolution nightclub. I play upstairs in the Revolucion De Cuba rum-bar most Saturdays so the order of the day here is a healthy slice of summery funk, goodtime disco and latin vibes. As usual with one of my party sets there's the odd bootleg, remix, and cock-up (can't win 'em all). I hope you like.

52M-009: Future Funk 2

It's been far too long since my last Future Funk mix and, with crippling popular demand* for another one, I finally pulled my finger out and sorted it this weekend.

The theme here is modern takes on funk: so there's everything from the sublime and soulful (Buscrates, Electric Wire Hustle, Blackpocket) to bassy neck-snappers (Leonard DStroy, Lopez) via out-and-out nu-funk gems (Darkhouse Fam, Max Butter, B.Bravo) and leftfield electro-wonk (Salva, Funkineven).

It's all over the place stylistically but that's kind of the point. Strap yourself in and get your funk on...

Another installment in the Soul Suite series this week, recorded live as part of a two hour show on Purple Radio's "Saturday Soul".

52M-002: TuneStep Vol.2

A lengthier mix this week, and for the second in this series I thought i'd seize the opportunity to offer up a second mix in my TuneStep series (because it *will* be a series, haha).

The driving force behind these mixes is "tuneful 2-step". So y'know: deep, slightly off-kilter garage/house/dubstep beats. To be completely honest I wouldn't want to try and nail individual categories on some of these records. Life's too short but hopefully there's a consistent feel.

Apologies in advance for the volume cut-outs/annoyances at certain points - a channel fader on my mixer is starting to give up the good fight and it's going to cost me nuff dollarz to replace it so we'll see how I get around that (or not) in the next few weeks. Good start eh? ;)

Tracklist:

Maya Jane Coles - Don't Tell

52M-001: Let's Get Ill

Off we go then...here's the very first installment in my 52 Mixtapes project. It's a lively, party-starting mix of hip-hop, funk, a bit of jazz, plenty of turntablism and a bit of mashupping. There's a few old favourites in there (i'll never get bored of that Cut Chemist remix of Shadow's "Number Song") as well as a few more recent treats.

I'm scraping the minimum timeframe barrel (this one clocks in at just over 32mins) but hey: it's still obeying the rules. And it's Friday. Which this mix will hopefully enforce with gusto. Plus i'm not exactly going to chuck my wad with a 2hour megamix in the opening week.

As usual: two turntables, a mixer, Torq...and some swearing. Enjoy!

Tracklist:

Redman - Ooooh Intro
Krafty Kuts - We Do This
Glenn Miller - In The Mood (Funk Ferret & Goodgroove Remix)
Major Lazer - Hold The Line (DJ C Remix)
James Brown - Funky Drummer (Listen To The Muro Mix)

Sunday, 1 January 2012

Welcome...

...to the 52 Mixtapes project. oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR! :D

I'm Marky de Sade and over the coming year i'm embarking on a little project that will hopefully see me record and upload (for your consumption) one musical mixtape every week. This isn't really a New Years Resolution because, in the main part, i'm not giving anything up. It's more a chance for me as a working DJ to give myself some regular turntable activity at home, as well as come up with something mildly entertaining for the listener*.

So if you really insisted on tying it into a New Years Resolution, i'd prefer you viewed it as a musically-obese DJ joining the tune-gym to shed some pounds in the form of mixes.

This is also a chance for me to claw back some of the fun I used to have doing my regular Friday night radio shows on Purple Radio, and play the kind of music I don't get chance to play when i'm catering for the average commercial club audience. That's not to say there won't be pop elements here and there, or even one or two out-and-out pop mixtapes - but you can hear that stuff anywhere and i'll try to keep it to a minimum.

Some of the mixes will be genre-led, others might have an overall theme like "summer" or "running" or "food", some might be producer-focused and others might be eclectic, random, all-over-the-shop messes. I have some vague plans in mind, but mostly i'll be taking each week as it comes and following my nose.

I'm going to impose SOME RULES so the project stays as consistent as possible and we don't get any bitching:

1. All mixtapes will be at least 30mins in duration.
2. Each new mixtape will be uploaded by the Saturday ending that week. So for this first week, my deadline for upload is: Saturday 7th January 2012.
3. Each mixtape will be uploaded to Mixcloud for streaming (and possibly one other download site), as well as being added to the excellent selection already present on the Purple Radio listen again server. If you follow me on Mixcloud it should automatically email you when each new mix is added.
4. Each mixtape will be prefixed with 52M- and then the number of the mix...001, 002 and so on. I trust most of you know how number-ordering goes. If not, pop into your local primary school (make sure they know you're arriving first - clambering over the fence at playtime isn't recommended).
5. Requests will be dealt with at the DJ's discretion. Some of you have requested personal mixes in the past and I might take this opportunity to sort them out and get them uploaded. Any additional requests received this year of this ilk will be scowled at, sniffed, licked, and then considered for consumption. I'm going to be pretty busy so i'll do what I can, basically.

Seems fair? COMMENT NOW if you're already not happy with something. ;)

Right, i'd better get busy then. See you at the weekend with 52M-001...

xx
